What is an HCG Test?
HCG testing is a form of pregnancy test that can provide a more accurate result than at-home tests. It detects pregnancy through the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone produced by the reproductive system and present in the blood or urine during early pregnancy. It’s the first pregnancy hormone produced after conception, signaling to the rest of your body that you’re pregnant. HCG is also responsible for boosting the production of progesterone, stopping menstruation, thickening the uterine lining, and guiding the development of the placenta. Its presence is a very accurate indicator that you’re pregnant, and although at-home pregnancy tests can detect it with fairly accurate results, it’s always best to get an HCG test from a healthcare provider.
When Would I Need an HCG Test for Pregnancy?
An HCG test is recommended if you’re unsure about the results of an at-home pregnancy test or if you’re worried about a false positive or false negative result. HCG tests can also be helpful because they can detect pregnancy sooner than at-home urine tests, sometimes as early as a week after conception. Because it can almost double in amount every three days for the first 8-10 weeks of pregnancy, we can track and monitor it to check for complications throughout pregnancy if you have a history of high-risk pregnancies.
What Happens During an HCG Test?
An HCG test can be performed in one of two ways – through a urine sample or through a blood sample. We often recommend HCG blood tests because not only are they more accurate, but we can monitor other important markers, such as iron levels, at the same time. Our medical team will take a quick blood sample and get prompt results so you can begin planning
What Are My Next Steps?
Once we have your test results, we can set you up for a successful early pregnancy. We’ll learn more about your pregnancy history and whether you have any past concerns like hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) or current symptoms making it difficult to get the nutrients you need. If we notice any deficiencies in your blood test, we can offer guidance on eating and considering IV therapies. We understand that a positive result can bring about a lot of different emotions, and we’re here to support you, body and mind.
