When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?
It’s recommended to take a pregnancy test as soon as you miss a period, which is typically two weeks after ovulation. Some women experience symptoms very early in pregnancy, such as fatigue, nausea, light spotting, and more, which can prompt a pregnancy test. At-home tests can be helpful, but they may not be as accurate in the early stages. Additionally, it’s normal to have some anxiety about whether an at-home test is accurate or not. In these cases, a professional early pregnancy test with our OB/GYN providers can give you peace of mind.
Types of Pregnancy Tests We Offer
Pregnancy tests work by detecting high levels of hCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone begins to increase in quantity when you become pregnant. There are two types of pregnancy tests, and at Materna, we can help you determine which one is best for your situation:
- Urine Pregnancy Testing: This test is similar to an at-home test but can be more accurate with our clinical testing technology.
- Blood Pregnancy Testing: This test uses a small blood sample to check for pregnancy hormones. It gives the extra benefit of allowing us to check iron levels, progression, and any possible complications that might be arising.
If you have a history of pregnancy complications, our OB/GYN providers can perform regular testing to check for signs. We can also monitor your iron levels and intervene if necessary.
Understanding Your Results
Interpreting your test results can sometimes be a challenge. Our OB/GYN providers can provide some insight and support as you navigate the difficulties of early pregnancy:
- Negative Test: A negative test doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not pregnant – it could mean that it’s too early to tell. Retesting in a few days can be beneficial.
- Positive Test: A positive test typically confirms a pregnancy, but we often recommend retesting often, especially if you have a history of miscarriage. Early pregnancy ultrasounds can also be key to ensuring everything is progressing well.
- Unclear: Pregnancy tests sometimes come back with mixed results. It can mean that you have low or fluctuating hCG levels that should be monitored further.
Next Steps If You Have a Positive Test
A positive pregnancy test can be a life-altering result. At Materna, we understand the big feelings it can bring and the challenges you may not feel ready for. We can provide the support and reassurance you need, ensuring you’re prepared for whatever comes next. We recommend an early pregnancy ultrasound and a meeting with our OB/GYN providers to discuss nutrition and what symptoms to watch out for. We’re here for you and can help you bridge the gap between now and your next stages.
