Preconception appointments are one of the most valuable steps you can take before getting pregnant. They are often overlooked, but they help ensure a healthier pregnancy, reduce risks, and provide peace of mind. Materna can help identify and manage health risks early. Pre-existing like diabetes, high blood pressure, a history of miscarriages, a LEEP procedure, thyroid issues, anemia, or obesity can affect fertility and pregnancy outcomes. Addressing these before conception helps lower the risk of miscarriage, preterm labor, preeclampsia, or complications during pregnancy.
Preconception visits allow us to:
- Review your medical and family history
- Review medications and vitamins
- Nutritional Counseling and Planning
- Offer Reproductive Generating Counseling and Testing
- Diagnostic Bloodwork and Ultrasound Screening
- Identify any risk factors that might make you likely to experience hyperemesis gravidarum, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preterm labor, or other obstetrical complications
- Review your hormonal health and overall fertility and ovarian health
- Create a plan to your mental and emotional health and well-being
Preconception appointments set the foundation for a healthier pregnancy. They help you understand your body, prevent avoidable risks, and start your journey feeling informed and supported.
What to Expect at Your Preconception Appointment
Preconception visits at Materna are an in-depth discussion with our OB/GYN providers. Our goal is to help you feel confident, supported, heard, and informed about what to expect from pregnancy and how best to protect yourself from complications. We can help you get started on optimizing your nutrition and taking supplements, as well as learn more about HG and when to seek help. Finally, if you’re worried about complications like miscarriage, we can discuss your risk and provide reassurance so you feel confident in your journey forward.
During your visit with our OB/GYN providers, you can expect:
- A full review of your medical history, family history, and fertility goals
- Vital signs assessment (blood pressure, weight, pulse)
- Urine sample collection
- Comprehensive bloodwork for hormone levels, vitamin deficiencies, and other key health markers
- Ultrasound screening to assess reproductive health
- A physical examination by one of our experienced clinicians
- A dedicated consultation to discuss your fertility, nutrition, mental health, and risk factors
- A follow-up visit (1–2 weeks later) to review your lab results and create a tailored care plan
